Campaign
Update #2
Message from Mayor McLaughlin |
| July
11, 2010 |
Dear
Friends,
Summer is well underway. I want
to take this time for a brief campaign update.
As we enjoy this summer season,
it is hard to believe the November 2nd election is just
over 100 days away. Momentum continues to build!
In May, the City reached a landmark
tax settlement with Chevron. Chevron will pay $114 million
to the City of Richmond over the next 15 years with most
of the money front-loaded in the first 5 years. This settlement
is the result of many years of community pressure calling
for fair taxation from our largest corporation in the City
of Richmond. Although not perfect, the settlement provides
badly-needed funding to the City as the continuing recession
continues to wreak havoc on our national economy. I am
proud to report that a balanced city budget was passed
a couple weeks ago with no layoffs.
We have taken so many positive steps
together in recent years - and this upcoming election gives
you many opportunities to help us build a Better Richmond
together. I am honored to highlight two extraordinary
and deeply committed progressive candidates for Richmond
City Council:
Jovanka Beckles www.JovankaBeckles.org
and
Eduardo Martinez www.EduardoMartinez4Richmond.net
Progressive Precinct Walking 2010
was launched June 12, and each Saturday since, volunteers
have gathered at the RPA office (see RPA contact info below)
for neighborhood lists and campaign materials. Join us!
Remember, our campaign efforts are funded with no money
from corporations or developers, which means we win by
ordinary people walking precincts, knocking on doors, and
talking with neighbors about the important work we have
been doing.
It is extremely gratifying that
the list of endorsers for
my mayoral campaign continues to grow. If your name is
missing, please consider adding it to the roster. Send
an email here EndorseGayle@MayorGayle.net and
we'll make sure your name is added.
Our campaign activities are fully
carried out by volunteers, but we do need your contribution
to cover the costs of printing and mailing. We are now
into the period of time when we can seek matching funds
from the city. Once we take in $10,000, we can access
$5,000 in matching funds. So if you haven't made a donation
to my campaign yet or if you are able to make a second
donation, you can donate from my website www.MayorGayle.net or
send your check to:
Gayle McLaughlin for Mayor 2010, PO Box 5284,
Richmond, CA 94805
Window signs are currently available
(yard signs can go up as of August 19). You can request
delivery of signs by emailing Paul Kilkenny Kilkennygreen@yahoo.com or
you can pick them up at the RPA office.
Wishing you and your families
a safe and happy summer. I'll be in close touch as
the campaign continues.
Sincerely,
Gayle
